The Great Barrier Reef is home to a myriad of wonders, and none more beautiful than the sand cay! These little islands are more like beaches in the middle of the reef and provide a home to lots of wonderful wildlife.
So here are some of our favourite that you can visit from Cairns!
Vlassoff Cay
This beautiful cay sits in the cystal clear waters of Vlassoff reef and you have to be very lucky to visit there are reef permits are very restricted! But if you do get a chance to go you'll be greeted by a perfect stretch of sand surrounded by pristine coral and curious bat fish.
Upolo Cay
This is a funny one, because tahnks to Cyclone Yasi stripping the top off you can only walk on this cay during low tide. One of our favourite reef boats ocean Freedom travels here daily so if you'd like to step foot on this piece pf paradise then check the tide times before you book!
Michaelmas Cay
Visiting this cay is certainly special for people who like birdwatching - it's a protected nesting habitat! So along the sandy shore rather than driftwood you'll find baby tern chicks and their scattered egg shells. Very beautiful and very cute!
Sudbury Cay
Look but don't touch - unless you have a mate with a boat that is! No trips go out here but if you make your day to the reef with Sunlover a VIP one then you'll be able to fly over the top of it. Gorgeous!
Green Island
Did you know that green island isn't actually an island? It's a sand cay covered in rainforest! Because of this it's much larger and houses a resort, with hundreds of people coming to visit every day.
For more reasons to love Cay's check out staff member Francesca's blog about why she's so obsessed with them.
